Another Year in the Books: Off the Sideline Tournament Recap

The Sideline Observer hosted our second-annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament on July 13 at the Koa Sports headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. It was a great day of friendly, and competitive ball for a great cause.

We partnered with the DirectRelief charity whose mission is to prepare the most vulnerable communities for disasters and emergencies. In total, we were able to raise $160 for the deserving cause.

Twelve teams arrived and began their quest for a chance at the SidelineO title. From high schoolers to old school ball players like esteemed journalist and father of Gregory King, Ledyard King there was no shortage of talent. After the first two games, and teams were eliminated the three-point contest was underway. Heading into it D.C. sports writer Sean Hannegan was the clear-cut favorite, but underdog and fellow D.C. sports writer Jake Hornyak almost ran away with the crown shooting the lights out of the gym. But Hornyak was out-shined by Hannegan as the rec-league MVP was too much for the competition.

After the 3-point tournament, the semi-finals began and team “Rex” and team “Too Old For This” found themselves in the championship. Team Rex kept it close at the beginning with early buckets from Walt Whitman High School alums Matt Anderson and CK Koumbourlis. But team Too Old For This showed that they were in fact not too old to win a SidelineO title as their experience led them to a commanding win.

Special thanks to Gregory King for organizing the event and everyone that came out to support the Sideline and a great cause. Also, major shoutout to Susan Hornyak for taking some excellent photographs and Koa Sports for hosting!

Can’t wait for next year!
