The premiere of the fourth season of the extremely popular cartoon “Rick and Morty” was last Sunday night. Since starting off slow during its early years, Rick and Morty has amassed a gigantic following because of its clever writing, colorful-yet-wacky animation style, and its parody of common sci-fi and pop culture tropes.

That being said, despite the popularity of the show, it has been two years since a new episode aired. With the long wait now over, there’s been plenty of time for fanboys like myself to obsess over previous episodes, fan theories, and podcasts related to the show. So with all of this build up, the pressure is high for the newest episode to be worth while.

“So, how IS the newest episode???” Well…….*drumroll please*

Really good!

While it seems really hard to deliver on a legendary expectation like many fans seem to have, Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have already got a solid start with an entertaining episode that reminded me what I loved about the earlier seasons of the show: a smart set of storylines that can make you think alongside many goofy one-liners to keep stoney viewers from getting too existential. Plenty of on-brand jokes and a continuation of its now-classic animation style kept the old feel while still delivering that new look we search for in a new season. The episode provided plenty of potential for growth throughout this new season.

Without giving any major spoilers away, this episode explores the theme of obsessing over one’s eventual mortality with a fantastic running joke about human consciousness continuing on through different bodies.

For fans of the show, I think it’s a successful episode that highlights what it is that makes Rick and Morty, well, Rick and Morty. However, I can’t speak for those of lesser fanboy magnitudes than myself, but I presume it evoked the same reaction to the brain candy of Rick and Morty that fans love. The number of inside jokes and references to earlier episodes in the series might be a turn off for some. However, I, as well as the rest of my friends watching, enjoyed the callbacks nonetheless.

Overall, I’d say it was a quality episode, and I can’t wait to see what the creators have in store for the rest of the season.
